My Story

Susan Maxwell

Ruby Sue Collection

A myriad of journeys inspired me to create a collection of Travel Themed Candles & Reed Diffusers.

The memories evoke happy times and of course beautiful aromas.

My career in the Travel Industry offered me opportunities to journey to distant shores of many stunning destinations. The Seychelles, Mauritius, Hawaii and the Far East to name a few.

This Limited Edition Travel themed collection with indulgent fragrances feature some of my personal favourite European sun destinations  –

Italy, Majorca, The South of Spain and The French Riviera.

Sóller

Growing up in Dublin in the early 70’s my parents loved travelling and I can recall the family trips to Majorca with great joy.
We always hired a car and travelled around the island, experiencing new and fresh adventures. I have fond memories of the coastal village of Port of Soller in North West Majorca and the sprawling orange groves.  The local tram ride in particular and picking oranges from the low hanging trees as we went along.  I return yearly to Majorca and it holds a very special place in my heart.

Frigiliana

On many visits with family and friends to Nerja in Southern Spain we never left without a trip to the village of Frigiliana which is only six kilometres away. It is one of the most beautiful and picturesque whitewashed villages with narrow streets decorated with mosaics and flowers. The colourful pots full of jasmine and bougainvillea with fragrant floral aromas are breathtaking. I always feel a great sense of peace here

Villefranche-sur-Mer

Travelling to the French Riviera in recent years, in particular Villefranche-sur-Mer (nestled between Nice and Monaco) has continuously remained a favourite destination. Retaining its village character and charm, it is full of beautiful, colourful houses. Walking through the pretty twisty lanes in the old town filled with ice cream parlours and chique restaurants to winding down in the evenings with a glass of vino in one of France’s most beautiful harbours.

Sicily

Sicily is well known for Europe’s biggest and most active volcano Mount Etna but also as a Mediterranean paradise. The small and pretty Sicilian town of Taormina, a 5 square mile hamlet is on a hill with sweeping views of the Ionian Sea and is the inspiration for my scent ‘Secrets of Sicily’. The town recently featured in the White Lotus TV production. The Corso Umberto is the main pedestrian thoroughfare, is busy with street
traders and quirky boutique shops, the most beautiful lemon scented products and of course great cafes. It can get very crowded but do remember to stop for a Nutella Gelato! Aside from its fresh and hearty cuisine and sumptuous seafood Taormina is just full of history with medieval and renaissance buildings. It’s worth visiting the ancient Greek Amphitheatre, ‘Teatro Antico di Taormina’ built in the 3 rd century and stages operas , ballets and concerts. The view is breath-taking with Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea as the backdrop. One can also catch the funicular ride from Taormina to the beach but to really get a sense of the whole area take a guided boat tour of the coastline.
I hope you enjoy your sensory escape to Sicily in your home!

Portofino

This pretty and quaint fishing village of Portofino on the Ligurian Coast, just an hour south of Genoa in Italy holds lovely memories. It is an icon of elegance and is most appreciated in the heart of the summer months when the flora is at its most lush. I especially love Italian scents with their Citrusy notes of Sweet Orange, Italian Bergamot and Amber.

When I first visited in the late 90’s I was so taken with it’s old world charm. The town itself is very small with approximately 500 residents and with its relaxed atmosphere, cafes and designer boutiques and the fact everything can be reached by foot, as the entire town can be explored in less than 30 minutes makes it a very popular destination!

I have returned a number of times and it always enthralls me. While one is sitting in the iconic main square, La Piazzetta and looking out at the myriad of yachts in its half moon shaped picturesque harbour it’s a truly magical experience. With its cobbled streets and the most colourful pastel facades of the houses Portofino is the jewel of the Italian Riviera and my inspiration for my new fragrance – Amore Portofino.
